| » End of the line for HD-DVD |
What has been dubbed the new Betamax war, HD-DVD has finally been discontinued by Toshiba as they admit defeat to the ever increasing dominance of the
Blu-Ray format.
Blu-ray discs are larger (50GB as opposed to the 30GB HD-DVD) and because of the drive inclusion in the PS3, 10.5 million units have been sold (as
opposed to the 2 million HD-DVD). The final bell tolled when Warner Bros. switched camps to the Sony format.
Fundamentally, the idea behind the drives were the same. A blue laser light will store data in very small chunks on a DVD style disc. The differences
came in that Sony wanted to use Java software and Tosiba wanted to use HDi, made by Microsoft. Last minute attempts as compromised failed.
Those who have bought HD-DVD drives will not be completely out: the drives will still be support by Toshiba.

| » Service Packs Galore from Microsoft! |
You wait for one bus to come along, and then three come along at once!!
Microsoft have announced the welcome news that XP, Vista and Office 2007 are to get new service packs, with the release candidates having already been
released.
XP will be updated to SP3 which wont add any significant capability, rather just combine the hotfixes from SP2 into one nice and neat package. You
will have to have SP1 already installed though as the original 2001 release version is no longer supported. This is to be the last pack released for
Windows XP.
Vista is getting the long awaited SP1 which will fix a variety of bugs and combine all the hotfixes. Also included are better device driver support, a
faster file copying algorithm and power consumption improvements for laptops.
